Week One
The point of view is first person because everything is told through Grant's point of view. A lesson before dying is a book by Ernest J. Haines and it takes place in 1940's post Civil War era in Louisiana. Grant is the main character of the story, Ms.Emma , Tante Lou, Jefferson, Mr. Henri are all characters in the story. The antagonists in this story are white people in the south oppressing Grant or the people who are keeping him in Louisiana. The tone of the story is bitter because Grant is being forced to do all the things he does not want to do and all the pressure is on him, so he is bitter. Two symbols would be Grant having to come through Mr. Henri's back door and the other would be there are only bathrooms for white people in the Bayonne prison. They are both symbols alike because they send a silent message that black people are beneath white people and black people must know this. Two pieces of irony is that Grant is just like the teacher before him even though it seemed like he despised the man, also Grant was mean to his students. Grant always had a reason but honestly it seemed as if he was being a bully to them. The theme of this story is to come to terms with what you have , and do your best with what you've been given.
