The attorney's defense backfired because he saw his client as an animal, and when animals hurt people they are put down. The attorney told the jury that his client was a hog, and that he didn't have the sense to leave as any man would. I believe the attorney wanted the jury to have sympathy for his client because he himself viewed his client as a pet that didn't know anything.

Majority of the jury declared Jefferson guilty, and he was to be sent to the electric chair. Tante Lou was disturbed by the word hog and Ms. Emma was devastated that he was called a hog. Ms. Emma was so upset by the word that she coerced Grant, the teacher and her godson, to make her son into a man before he died. Ms. Emma, I believe wanted to have a hand in making her son a man by doing what she knows, and that is taking care of her son. Ms. Emma thought about the food she brought Jefferson and she knew to not give him corn because hogs eat corn and her son was not a hog. Ms. Emma had all the small things in mind to help Jefferson, she tried her best to get to him by the food she provided, only his favorites.

Tante Lou only wanted what Ms. Emma wanted and she forced her nephew to help Ms. Emma. Tante knew that Grant was right for helping Jefferson, even though Grant didn't want to do anything for Jefferson, but he stayed by his family. Grant goes in this story and tells of the cycle of men since slave days, and he stated that their women don't have any men in their lives to stand for them.
Grant wants Jefferson to break the cycle for Ms. Emma, Jefferson's mother.
